Calcium Scale Buildup

That chalky white ring at the waterline, or scale inside your equipment, is calcium coming out of solution — here’s how to remove it and slow it down.

Waterline Ring

  1. Scrub the waterline with a pumice stone or scale-specific pad made for pool tile, working in small sections.
  2. Use a calcium/scale remover product formulated for pool surfaces rather than a generic household cleaner.
  3. Lower calcium hardness going forward if your test kit shows it’s consistently high, using a partial drain-and-refill with softer water.
  4. Wipe the waterline down weekly to prevent buildup from returning.
Safety note: Always test a small, inconspicuous area first when using an acid-based scale remover on tile or stone.

Pool Equipment & Plumbing

  1. Check heater and pump housings for visible scale flaking, since calcium buildup can restrict water flow and reduce heater efficiency.
  2. Use a plumbing-safe scale remover through the circulation system per the product’s instructions.
  3. Keep calcium hardness and pH within the recommended range going forward to slow future scale formation.
  4. Have a pool professional inspect a heater that has visible internal scale, since heat exchangers can be damaged by heavy buildup.
Safety note: Never run a heater with significant internal scale buildup, since restricted flow can cause it to overheat.
