Low Chlorine or Won’t Hold Sanitizer

When chlorine disappears faster than you can add it, the cause is usually one of two things: too much stabilizer, or too much for the chlorine to clean up after.

Chlorine Lock / High Stabilizer (CYA)

  1. Test your cyanuric acid (stabilizer) level, since chlorine stops working effectively once CYA climbs too high.
  2. If CYA is high, the most reliable fix is partially draining and refilling the pool with fresh water to dilute it.
  3. Switch to an unstabilized chlorine source, like liquid chlorine, for shocks going forward to avoid adding more CYA.
  4. Retest chlorine effectiveness after dilution, since it should respond normally again once CYA is back in range.
Safety note: Never drain an in-ground pool completely, since an empty pool shell can shift or float in wet soil.

High Bather Load / Heavy Use

  1. Shock the pool after a pool party or unusually heavy swim day, since body oils and sweat consume chlorine quickly.
  2. Increase your chlorine feeder or floater output slightly during high-use weeks rather than waiting for a low reading.
  3. Rinse off before swimming when possible, since this measurably reduces the organic load that eats up chlorine.
  4. Keep testing daily during heavy-use stretches instead of your normal weekly schedule.
Safety note: Keep chlorine products stored away from direct sunlight and away from any other pool chemicals.
