Opening Your Pool for the Season

A pool that sat closed all winter needs a specific sequence to come back online safely and swim-ready.

In-Ground Pools

  1. Remove standing water and debris from the top of the cover before pulling it off, to keep leaves and dirt out of the pool.
  2. Reconnect the plumbing lines, remove winter plugs, and reinstall the pump and filter equipment.
  3. Refill the pool to normal operating level and run the filter system to circulate and catch debris.
  4. Test and rebalance the water chemistry once it’s circulating, then shock the pool before regular swimming.
Safety note: Check that all electrical equipment is dry and grounded properly before restoring power after a winter of storage.

Above-Ground Pools

  1. Reinstall the pump and filter equipment you stored over winter and reconnect all hoses and fittings.
  2. Remove the winter cover carefully, rinsing off debris rather than dragging it across the water.
  3. Top off the water level back to mid-skimmer height and prime the pump before starting the system.
  4. Retest the water and shock the pool, since sitting water typically needs a fresh sanitizer boost to open safely.
Safety note: Inspect hoses and fittings for cracks from winter storage before running the pump at full pressure.
